no monz, no funz

AKA – if you have no money, it is no fun.

How much does a speech language pathologist make? Excellent question. Let’s take in a few factors and let’s ask ASHA. Because ASHA is legit.

1) Where do you live?

2) What is your setting?

3) How long have you been an SLP?

If you’re in a health care facility the median income was $70,000 in 2009. $69,000 in the Midwest, $80,000 in the West, Northeast and South, $70,000. Four to six years of experience: $60,000. 22+ years: $80,000. SNF SLPs make the most, outpatient clinics the least.

Schools? Median income: $57,000 (9 to 10 months) – $65,000 (11 to 12 months) in 2008. The highest an academic SLP makes with 28+ years of experience: $71,000. Midwest: $58,000, Northeast: $59,000, South: $54,000, West: $59,000.

So, basically, with rounding and averaging and such, you’ll make like, $70, 000.

Life could be worse.

I really need to pay off my student loans.

The job market is looking pretty good, right? Have any figures on starting salaries?

Starting school SLP is $40,000ish and for medical is $52,000ish. Job outlook is pretty positive. I haven’t encountered any SLP classmates who are unemployed. I think probably areas of higher need are title 1 rural schools.
